LENT LUNCHES The Rectory 12.30 – 1.30 * Friday 12, 19 and 26 March
- the opportunity to share a frugal “Lent Lunch” of soup, bread and water. There will be the opportunity to make a donation to Water Aid in return for this modest lunch.
HOLY WEEK AND EASTER As the seasons turn and we move through the Church’s calendar, we approach Holy Week, what the Early Church called ‘The Great Week.’ There will be a service each day of Holy Week.
COMPLINE : Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 9 pm at St Helen’s: Compline is simply Night Prayer, the last act of worship of the day, a time of quiet and prayer before retiring. I do encourage you to come to St Helen’s for this service, when there will be time to be still and to come into God’s presence in quiet and reflection.
MAUNDY THURSDAY On Maundy Thursday there is a eucharist at 8 pm at St Helen’s. The sharing of the sacrament on this night is particularly moving as we recall this night of the Last Supper, as the words of our Lord as he sat with his disciples and took bread and wine: ‘Do this in remembrance of me.’
The gospels tell us how after this Last Supper with his friends Jesus goes out into the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Following the service of Holy Communion there will be a Vigil. This means simply, a time of watching, as Jesus asked his disciples ‘Watch and pray with me.’
The vigil means that St Helen’s will be open until midnight and anyone is welcome to come along and spend a time in silence and prayer, for any length of time. There will be suggestions for Bible passages to reflect on, or you can simply use the silence to be with our Lord. If you have not experienced it I do commend it to you as a special time.
GOOD FRIDAY begins with a service at St Thomas’ at 10 am. We the join at 11.30 with others from the Baptist/Methodist Church and the Storehouse for a brief ecumenical act of worship outside St Helen’s.
In the afternoon there is a service at St Helen’s at 2 pm. This service traditionally marks the last hour of Jesus on the Cross and will include music, readings and reflections for this Friday we call ‘Good’. A morning and an afternoon service mean that there is a time for everyone to mark this day, in what can be a busy weekend.
On Easter Day we come together with worship in all three churches (St Thomas’ at 9, St Helen’s at 10 and St John’s at 11.15) to celebrate the good news of the Risen Christ, alive in the Church and in the world. All are warmly welcome.
ELECTORAL ROLL Each year the register of Church Members, known as the Electoral Roll, is brought up to date in time for the Annual General Meeting. If you are not already on the Roll and if you regard yourself as a member of St Helen’s, St John’s or St Thomas’ then you have the opportunity to show it by completing an application form. This enables you to stand for election or vote on issues concerning the Church. This updating or revision of the Roll must be completed before the end of March and in time for the Annual Parish Church Meeting on 19 April. (There will be further details on the Annual Meeting of the Parish in the April Link) The Roll can be viewed at each church and forms for membership are at back of church or available from the Electoral Roll Officer, Colin Lloyd on 730464.
